New York City: Massive power failure paralyzes Manhattan for hours

EIn the New York borough of Manhattan, a massive power outage affected public life for hours. On Saturday evening, elevators got stuck and subways stopped, the lights went out in many places on Broadway, and digital billboards went out on the famous Times Square. Shortly before midnight, the utility company Con Edison succeeded in restoring the electricity. Until then, however, more than 70,000 customers were in the dark.

The fire brigade named a transformer fire as the cause of the mega failure. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said the power grid collapsed from around 7 p.m. local time. The incident was “dangerous”. “You can’t have a power outage of this magnitude in this city.”

Several performances on the famous Broadway theater had to be canceled that evening, including the play “Hadestown”, which won a Tony Award for best musical only in June.

Spontaneous concerts on the streets

However, a number of members of the ensemble spontaneously put on a small show in front of the theater on the street for disappointed visitors.

The 30-year-old Emily Totero actually wanted to see the musical “Moulin Rouge” with New York visitors. But before they even got to the theater district, the lights went out, said Totero.

Madison Square Garden was also not spared, where pop singer Jennifer Lopez performed. Around 9:30 p.m. in the middle of their fourth song, everything suddenly went dark, concert visitors reported. The arena was later cleared, and employees in the adjoining Pennsylvania Station helped themselves with emergency generators to have some light.

The power went out in the Rockefeller Center, a centrally located building complex in Manhattan, and in the Upper West Side district. Thousands of people poured out of the dark buildings onto Broadway. Because the lights were out, residents of Hell’s Kitchen began to direct the traffic themselves. The local transport authority MTA reported via Twitter, there are failures in several subway stations.

Governor Cuomo announced that there were no injuries as a result of the blackout. But the “fact that it happened at all is unacceptable”. Therefore, there will be an investigation by the Public Services Authority.

The blackouts occurred on the anniversary of a 1977 blackout in New York that left almost the entire city in the dark.
