New York After renewed mass protests in New York after the death of the African American George Floyd, the authorities have also imposed a night curfew for the largest US metropolis. Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Monday on Twitter that the curfew would apply on Tuesday night from 11pm (local time / 5 a.m. CEST) to 5 a.m.

The measure will be taken in consultation with Governor Andrew Cuomo to ensure the safety of citizens. The police presence will be increased.

Floyd was killed in a brutal police operation in Minneapolis on Monday last week. Protests then spread across the country, leading to riots and looting in some metropolises. Before New York, at least 40 cities in the United States had already imposed night curfews, including the capital Washington.

In New York on Monday night, there had been mass protests for the fourth night in a row. Up to 6000 people took part in the protests, especially in the districts of Manhattan and Brooklyn, as local media reported, citing authorities.

Most of the protests were peaceful. Some demonstrators, however, threw glass bottles and rubbish at police officers, smashed windows, looted shops, set fire to cars and set fires in rubbish bins. The Manhattan Bridge between Brooklyn and Manhattan has been temporarily closed.

In the metropolis of New York, which has been badly affected by the coronavirus pandemic, the first restrictions are to be relaxed on June 8, after the number of new infections had recently continued to decline.

That should not be endangered by mass gatherings, said Cuomo. “Protest – but do it wisely.” He condemned the violence, but also said that some actions by police officers had further fueled protesters’ anger. That will be investigated by the prosecutor.
