New York City FC won the 26th edition of Major League Soccer on Saturday. In the final, it defeated Portland, which played in its own stadium, in a penalty shootout 4-2. After 90 minutes and overtime it was 1-1.
New York dominated the game, but only Valentin Castellanos (41′) found his way to the goal. The missed chances broke the New Yorkers sour when Felipe Mora scored the equalizer seconds before the whistle, in the fourth minute of stoppage time. After extra time had failed, goalkeeper Sean Johnson turned out to be a New York hero by stopping two penalties.
It is the first title for New York FC, which also reached the final for the first time. Portland is the 2015 champion.
