Dhe New York police arrested a man on suspicion of setting fire to a giant Christmas tree in front of the Fox News headquarters. As the police announced on Wednesday, the 49-year-old was caught climbing the support structure of the 15-meter-high tree at night. Shortly afterwards the richly decorated tree went up in flames.

According to authorities, the suspect had a lighter with him. Experts from the fire brigade should now determine whether he also used fire accelerators. The fire was quickly brought under control and no one was injured. Police had not yet given a motive for the incident, but Fox News Media chief executive Suzanne Scott described it as a “malicious arson attack.”

The head of the conservative broadcaster, who used to be very popular with supporters of ex-President Donald Trump, criticized a “willful and brazen act of cowardice”. She announced that a new tree will soon be in the same place – “as a message that there can be peace, light and joy even in a dark moment like this.” Fox News reported that the tree with about 10,000 glass ornaments and 100,000 lights was decorated.
