New York Candidate Creates Office of Sports, Wellness and Recreation

NEW YORK.– This city created the Office of Sports, Welfare and Recreation as a result of a Law approved this Thursday and sponsored by the president of the borough of Brooklyn and candidate for mayor, Eric Adams, the spokesman of the City Council, Corey Johnson, and the councilman Dominican for Upper Manhattan, Ydanis Rodríguez.

It would be responsible for creating strategies and initiatives to support youth sports activities throughout the city, as well as creating a channel for disadvantaged children to be placed in competitive sports programs and competitions.

This creation is the first step in dismantling the barriers that prevent talented and young working-class New Yorkers from achieving their athletic and sports dreams.

The Big Apple is home to some of the best sports training programs in the country, yet children from underserved communities are often unable to reach their full potential because they are hampered by their socioeconomic status and lack of access, it was reported. .

The office will also create the opportunity for sports institutions such as Yankee Stadium, the Mets at Citi Field, the NY Knicks at Madison Square Garden, the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center, the NY City Football Club, the NY Red Bulls, and NY Rangers, among other sports institutions to be an integral part of this initiative.

For his part, Councilor Rodríguez said “it’s about fairness, everyone saw the disparities that came to light due to the coronavirus, many underserved communities suffer from higher rates of asthma, heart disease and obesity.

He added that “these communities became the most vulnerable because they lacked many of the resources and opportunities that are available to other neighborhoods, Rodríguez said.

I would like to thank the president of the City Council; Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer; the ombudsman, Jumaane Williams; to my colleagues in the Council and, of course, to the sports leaders and participating institutions who accompany and support us, “said the councilor.

The bill was also supported by sports leaders and institutions such as Armory Track, NY Road Runners, Nzingha Prescod, Olympic Fencer, World Medalist, Hudson Sailing, Row New York, Bike NY, Inwood Little League, Grand Slam, BAMESO USA, Las Dominican Sports Foundations, Peter Westbrook and Wendy Hilliard Foundation.

Also, Ice Hockey in Harlem, Kings County Tennis League, Laureus USA, Asphalt Green, Gregorio Luperón, JB Sports, Youth Service League, Van Courtland Titans Youth Football Program Inc, Trident Swim Foundation, Uptown Soccer, Washington Heights Tennis Association .
