A New York City bakery has spoken out after its pride flag was sliced by vandals.
Sugar Sweet Sunshine, a popular cupcake bakery on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, spoke out against the destruction of the rainbow flag that had proudly hung on its storefront for two years.
The bakery, which has grappled with a number of acts of anti-social behavior in recent weeks, published an article about the incident on Tuesday, October 20 after the flag was apparently cut.
An Instagram post from the bakery read, “Seriously? Do we have to bring everything to our store at the end of the night ??? Someone felt the need to cut our pride flag with a knife last night.
“I know in the grand scheme of what’s going on in our city these days, it’s not monumental. We can and will get a new one, but that’s not the point. That’s why someone would do that which is disturbing.
The owners said they were unsure whether the incident was an act of hate or random vandalism.
The owners are annoyed by a hurtful act of vandalism.
Co-owner Peggy Williams said CBS New York: “I don’t understand why someone would do such a thing. It is not a valuable piece of our property, but it is significant, and there is no point in destroying someone’s property like that.
The incident was not reported to the New York Police Department, Williams added.
One customer said: “People can be so sick! I’m sorry this has happened to you! “
Another added: “I would like to think that anyone who has done this is because they want a pride flag and cannot buy one. But we all know that’s not true and we understand the message of hatred behind this vile action. I’m sorry to see this. Not because it happened in New York.
This is far from the only such incident. In 2019, a Manhattan gay bar spoke out after its pride flag was shot down and set on fire twice in a month.
