New York asks to prepare for increase in cases and school closings

The mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, assured this Friday that the city must prepare for a possible closure of schools next week due to the rise in cases of covid-19, while the governor of the state, Andrew Cuomo, He said the problem is restaurants, bars and gyms.

“This is not something that parents want, but we have to prepare for a school closure,” De Blasio said in an interview with local radio station WNYC.

De Blasio asked parents to have “alternative” plans for a possible temporary closure of schools and the start of classes only remotely.

The possible measure responds to an increase in the rate of positive coronavirus tests in the city, which is approaching the 3% threshold imposed by the city to take more restrictive measures.

The governor of the state, Andrew Cuomo, said at a press conference that the city can impose these limitations, since they are within the metrics established at the state level, but recommended other parameters such as the rate of positive infections only in schools, where up to the moment the covid-19 manifests itself in a very moderate way.

“If schools were closed, I would encourage local authorities, parents and teachers to agree on new parameters to open schools as soon as possible,” said the governor.

In Cuomo’s opinion, the problem “is not in schools, but in bars, restaurants, gyms and living rooms, what is now called family contagion.”

With the increase in infections, the city ordered this week to close bars and restaurants starting at 10 at night.

In spite of everything, New York City and the rest of the state have lower contagion rates than in most of the rest of the country and than in most of its neighboring states.

Cuomo will meet this weekend with the governors of six contiguous states in the northeast of the country to coordinate measures and prevent the spread of the second wave of the pandemic this winter.

New York is surrounded by a sea of covid-19,” Cuomo said.

The United States has 10.6 million confirmed coronavirus cases and more than 243,000 deaths from the covid-19 disease, according to an independent tally from Johns Hopkins University.

Despite the fact that New York is no longer the state with the highest number of infections (it reports almost 546,000), it is still the worst hit in terms of deaths in the United States with more than 33,900.
