New York, Jan 16 (EFE) .- New York, one of the states most affected by the pandemic in the US, has administered 83% of the vaccines against covid-19 distributed by the federal government and its authorities requested this Saturday more supply to meet the demand derived from its large population.
“We are in a race to get vaccines … as soon and fairly as possible. Yet we have 7 million New Yorkers competing for a fraction of the doses that the federal government has made available,” said the governor. of the state, Andrew Cuomo, in a statement.
So far, hospitals and mass vaccination centers have administered some 770,000 doses to health workers, essentials, and the elderly, the vast majority as part of the first inoculation, but “appointments have been quickly filled” for the next 14 weeks.
Only in the last 24 hours, Cuomo said, the state has put more than 73,000 doses, but this week the federal government plans to distribute 250,000 doses while the previous one was 300,000.
New York, which like the rest of the United States is seeing its numbers of infected, hospitalized and deceased increase, has deployed a vaccine administration network complementary to that of hospitals, including pharmacy chains, a stadium or a convention center who work night and day.
As the governor disclosed this Saturday, on the last day massive tests are being carried out – around 300,000 a day – and almost 16,000 people have tested positive for covid-19, which places the percentage of infections on tests carried out on the 5th, 77%, while 157 people have died.
At the moment there are 8,888 patients with covid-19 admitted, 80 more than yesterday, while hospitals in the region still have a third of their beds available, according to data from the Administration.
New York, which was the epicenter of the pandemic last spring, is currently the fourth state with the most accumulated cases, 1.2 million, but it remains the one that has registered the most deaths, 40,800, according to the independent count of Johns Hopkins University. .
The United States, the country most affected in the world by the pandemic, reached a cumulative 23,503,587 cases of covid-19 and 391,624 deaths on Friday, according to the independent count from Johns Hopkins University.
