New twist in Maddie McCann disappearance case: suspect charged | Abroad

A man in Germany has been identified as an official suspect in the case of the disappearance of British girl Madeleine (Maddie) McCann, who disappeared 15 years ago during a family vacation in Portugal. The Portuguese Public Prosecution Service had requested the German authorities to do so.

German police said in 2020 they were investigating a German man already in prison in connection with the disappearance of McCann, who was three years old at the time of her disappearance. According to the German newspaper Bild it is the same person, although the authorities have not confirmed this. It would be Christian B., a German pedophile who was previously mentioned in the case and is currently in custody.

The German authorities have been claiming for a few years that they have evidence for Maddie’s murder. The decision to officially designate Christian B. as a suspect may have to do with the fact that a limitation period of fifteen years applies in Portugal.

Madeleine McCann, known as Maddie, disappeared on May 3, 2007 in Praia da Luz, a seaside town in southern Portugal, where she was vacationing with her parents and a group of friends. Her disappearance sparked a massive international campaign to find Maddie. Photos of the toddler, with her light brown curly hair and big eyes, went around the world.

After a 14-month investigation, in which even the parents were suspected for a time, the Portuguese police closed the case in 2008, only to reopen it five years later. The case only gained momentum in 2020, when the German public prosecutor announced that it was certain that Maddie had died and that a 43-year-old man was seen as the prime suspect.
