New top model from Affalterbach: AMG GLA 45 with a powerful four-cylinder


Mercedes is known for the fact that shortly after the presentation of the series models, the cars refurbished in Affalterbach drive around the corner. It is no different with the new GLA, which is now headed by the AMG 45 S.

It is a well-known fact that in Affalterbach there is no mess, but padding, and it is therefore not surprising that the most powerful mass-produced four-cylinder turbo engine currently works in the new AMG GLA 45. With the performance data, you are not only at the forefront at the regulars’ table, but should also be above the performance doubt on the road.

With 387 or 421 hp, the four-cylinder engine in the AMG GLA 45 and 45S is currently one of the most powerful of its kind.

Offered in two stages, in the first 387 horses pull on a leash, in the second there are even 421 hp that provide the propulsion. With the larger herd, the sprint to 100 km / h is completed in 4.3 seconds. Admittedly, the difference in acceleration between 45 S and 45 is marginal. Because the 387 hp is still enough to bring the load to country speed in 4.4 seconds.

Up to 270 km / h fast

Cool computers, although the prices are not yet known, could rely on the 2.0 liter engine with the small cooker, because the maximum torque differs only by 20 Newton meters. There are 480 for the 45, with the 45 S a whopping 500 Newton meters are passed to all four wheels. So while you can still fight for victory at the traffic light start, there are clear limits to the top speed. Here are 250 against 270 km / h.

However the competition may end, AMG promises an extremely spontaneous response, which is to be guaranteed by an elaborately coordinated torque curve. While the 500 Newton meters from 5000 to 5250 crankshaft revolutions are presented, the 480 Newton meters of the basic variant are already available between 4750 and 5000 rpm. From a technical point of view, this design is similar to the power delivery that takes place via the well-known eight-speed dual clutch transmission, that of a naturally aspirated engine. Unlike in the case of the NEDC, the consumption should be in the third mix at a maximum of 9.3 liters. In real driving, however, 2 to 3 liters more can be expected.

But because we have just written ourselves into the intoxication of the technical details, here are a few innovations that should inspire the power pack: For example, the shaft of the compressor and turbine wheel was roller-supported for the first time. This reduces the mechanical friction in the turbocharger to a minimum. The charger responds more spontaneously and revs up faster – by the way, at a maximum of up to 169,000 rpm.

In addition, a two-stage gasoline injection is used for the first time. Stage one shoots the fuel at 200 bar into the combustion chambers, stage two adds an intake manifold channel injection with solenoid valves, which in turn ensures the high performance of the engine. And because the power is so high, a sophisticated cooling system ensures a cold cylinder head and a warm crankcase to keep internal engine friction as low as possible.

However, all of this, like the chassis design, will only be experienced in practice. Because the chassis of Affalterbach also touched the GLA 45 to guarantee stable straight running and a low tendency to roll. If you opt for the adaptive damping system, you can also choose between three different suspension settings. The spectrum should be clear: it ranges from comfortable to sporty.

And what else distinguishes the AMG models from the boring everyday mates? Of course, the AMG-specific radiator grille trim with the vertical slats, also known as the Panamericana grille, LED high-performance headlights, flared wheel arches in the fenders, large air intakes in the front bumper and the front splitter in chrome. As the 45, the GLA stands on 19-inch wheels. The 20-inch model is already one step higher in series. At the rear, two round double tailpipe trims ensure the striking sportiness; in between is the diffuser with four vertical fins, which of course should provide improved aerodynamics.

The interior is largely the same as that of the GLA brothers. The large TFT, which forms a unit between the central display and control monitor above the center console, is dominant. The sports steering wheel with control buttons, which can be used, among other things, to control the driving programs, the yellow accents on the seats, on the door panels and on the dashboard is typical of AMG.
