New Study Reveals How Deadly the Delta Variant Corona is

Jakarta

A recent study from Canada found a link between Corona varian Delta on the risk of severity to death. From a retrospective study conducted by the University of Toronto, it showed a significant difference in the risk caused by the Delta variant with the Corona Alpha, Beta, and Gamma variants.

The study, published by the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) analyzed more than 212,000 COVID-19 cases reported in Ontario from February 7 to June 27, 2021. Researchers compared the risk of hospitalization to death due to the Corona variant.

From the study, they looked at the impact of COVID-19 patient infected with Alpha, Beta, and Gamma variants. Result:

52 percent of patients are hospitalized

89 percent of patients require intensive care

51 percent of patients died

However, it turns out that the risk caused by the Delta variant is greater than varian Corona other. The following is the risk of the Delta variant to COVID-19 patients:

108 percent of patients are at risk of hospitalization

235 percent of patients at risk for ICU admission

133 percent of patients are at risk of death

Researchers say this risk is seen from various factors, such as age, gender, vaccination status, and comorbidities.

“This important study from Canada reinforces the serious impact that the Delta variant has. It is well known that Delta is more infectious than other viral variants,” said Prof William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

“This new study is reassuring and reinforces the finding that it also causes more severe disease.”

This study is also said to strengthen previous research on the Delta variant in England, Scotland, and Singapore. They show an increased risk of the Delta variant.
