New strain of Covid arrives in Latin America

Washington.- The head of the fight against the pandemic in the United States, epidemiologist Anthony Fauci, has warned that in recent days the coronavirus has grown out of control in his country.

Asked by the CNN news network, the doctor admitted that the pandemic “is out of control in many ways.”

“We’re on a rebound, as we call it, which is out of control in many ways.”

He explained that at the start of winter, a new spike in infections started with a very marked inflection.

“If you look at the evolution from late winter to early spring 2020, we had a peak in late winter and early spring,” he continued, “another rebound at the beginning of summer, and at the moment we are at a peak, the worsening of which, the inflection of which is very clear ”.

He expressed great concern that in January the numbers will rise exponentially to unprecedented numbers.

“I think we have to assume it’s going to get worse, you know, we’re in between 100,000 or 200,000 infections a day. There was a period in the worst period of December, where it was above 200,000, which I hope we will not hit again because it makes us totter: you have cases, you have hospitalizations and, consequently, deaths ”.

Fauci, who has been appointed chief medical adviser to new United States President Joe Biden, has called for continuing to practice simple things like not meeting in large groups of people.

“In this season, apart from traveling, which is now too late, because we are in the middle of the Christmas and New Year holidays, people are going to travel or have already traveled. We are trying to make people travel less, and for those who have already done so, what you need to do is not get together in large groups, just immediate family ”.

Meeting enough people to dine under one roof and especially in unventilated places will pose many problems, he warned.

The United States is perhaps the country most affected by the pandemic with 19 million infections and more than 335,000 deaths, according to the count from Johns Hopkins University.
