New smartphones get an important feature

Xiaomi is taking an important step into the future: The smartphone manufacturer has secured access to a technology that will soon be indispensable. The model is Samsung. A big question mark remains.

When it comes to folding cell phones, manufacturers face a major problem: glass does not bend. A plastic coating for the display, such as that used for the Galaxy Fold, on the other hand, is prone to errors and easily scratched. The solution: Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), which Samsung installed for the first time in the Galaxy Z Flip. So far, the South Koreans are the only ones using UTG – but that is changing now.

For foldable smartphones: Xiaomi secures Ultra Thin Glass

According to a well-known cellular insider on Weibo have each other too Xiaomi and Huawei secured access to promising technology, such as Android Authority reported. This allegedly suggests information from the supply chain, the source claims.

Compared to the Galaxy Fold, which had to struggle with major display problems, especially in the first edition, the Galaxy Z Flip made the Ultra Thin Glass a much better figure. According to many testers, UTG still does not feel like glass, but it is much more supple and robust than plastic coatings, as used on other folding phones. In the future, not only Samsung users will benefit from this, but also buyers of Xiaomi and Huawei smartphones.

Xiaomi is one of many China manufacturers that are currently swimming on a wave of success:

Xiaomi’s folding phone could appear soon

It is still unclear in which folding cellphones Xiaomi plans to use UTG in the future. In contrast to Samsung and Huawei, the Chinese manufacturer does not yet have any foldable smartphones in the program. In early 2019 Xiaomi boss Lin Bin only showed a prototype. Later, reports emerged that Xiaomi’s first folding smartphone from converted 999 euros to be sold could and therefore significantly cheaper than the competition.

The fact that Xiaomi has now secured access to Ultra Thin Glass could, however, be an indication that a company’s folding cell phone is no longer long in coming.
