With the New Hampshire Republican presidential primary just six days away, a new poll has revealed that former President Donald Trump is leading the pack, with former ambassador Nikki Haley in a solid second place and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis trailing far behind. According to a survey conducted by Suffolk University, the Boston Globe, and NBC10 in Boston, Trump enjoys support from 50% of likely voters in the primary, while Haley stands at 34% and DeSantis at 5%. The poll was conducted on Monday and Tuesday, following Trump’s resounding victory in the Iowa caucuses.
In Iowa, Trump dominated the competition, securing 51% of the vote, with DeSantis a distant second at 21% and Haley trailing at 19%. However, it is worth noting that New Hampshire has a different electorate compared to Iowa. Moderate voters in the Granite State hold significant sway, and independent voters, who can participate in either major party primary, have traditionally played a crucial role in shaping New Hampshire’s presidential contest.
The latest poll reveals that among registered Republicans, Trump maintains a substantial 61%-34% lead over Haley. However, among independents, Haley edges out Trump with 44% support compared to his 38%. When it comes to ideology, Trump holds a strong lead of 6%-18% among self-described conservatives. Conversely, Haley leads with 56% support among those who consider themselves moderate or liberal.
This data suggests that Trump is resonating strongly with Republicans and male independents, while Haley is finding success among moderates and female independents. David Paleologos, Director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center, noted that Haley’s strength lies in her ability to attract moderates and female independents at a two-to-one ratio compared to Trump.
New Hampshire’s presidential primary has a long-standing reputation as the first-in-the-nation primary, making it a crucial state for candidates to win or perform well in. The state’s moderate voters and independent constituents hold significant influence over the outcome.
The survey interviewed 500 likely GOP primary voters in New Hampshire and has an overall margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points. As the primary draws nearer, it remains to be seen if Trump can maintain his lead or if Haley will gain momentum and close the gap.
