New pedestrian bridge over the Brussels canal with boat …

The parts of Suzan Daniel Bridge, the new bridge that will link the Brussels canal between Tour & Taxis and the North Station, have arrived in the capital by boat. The metal structures that will form the bridge will be unloaded from the boat on Thursday at the Materials and Akenkaai. The bridge should be ready for use by next summer.

The Suzan Daniel Bridge is specifically reserved for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport. Thanks to the construction of the bridge, a shorter route will be created for active road users between Simon Bolivarlaan and Havenlaan and Picardstraat. The bridge will therefore run above the quays. Two traffic zones will be set up on the 200-meter-long bridge: a seven-meter-wide roadway for public transport and a six-meter-wide bicycle and pedestrian zone with wooden cladding.

The six metal structures that form the bridge over the Antwerp-Brussels-Charleroi canal were created last year by studio Aelterman in Ghent. These are the pillars that will support the central bridge deck and the two arches that will support the concrete road surface. Contractor Jan de Nul has meanwhile built the foundations and plinths on the Akenkaai and Materialenkaai and contractor Van Laere provided an access ramp between the Akenkaai and the Willebroekkaai.

The Suzan Daniel Bridge was named after LGBT activist Suzan Daniel after a participatory process. Work on the bridge is expected to be completed by the summer of 2021. The price tag of the project, including the studies, is 9.4 million euros, reports developer Beliris.
