New Jersey urges residents to avoid non-essential interstate travel – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW JERSEY – As New Jersey marks its fourth day in a row with more than 1,000 coronavirus cases a day, the state’s Governor, Phil Murphy, urged residents to avoid nonessential interstate travel.

One day after announcing that a a member of his cabinet had tested positive, Murphy announced while in preventive quarantine Thursday that its residents should avoid traveling to other states unless necessary.

“New Jerseyans should avoid all unnecessary interstate travel,” he said. “The numbers that we get from day to day are alarming.”

New Jersey is in the midst of a battle against new spikes in cases. In just Thursday alone, the state reported 1,030 daily cases of coronavirus. Daily case totals have doubled over the past month, with officials pointing to small gatherings and parties at home as a top source.

New Jersey now has four counties reporting more than 100 new cases each day, representing a large increase that does not seem to be stopping.

However, there is no indication yet that New Jersey will be added to the tri-state area quarantine list. Despite meeting the requirements to be added, Governor Cuomo has insisted that it is practically impossible to add the state to the list since the economic ties of both states are strong enough that a quarantine of travelers from both states is easy to carry out.

“There is no practical way to quarantine those who visit New Jersey and Connecticut in New York,” Cuomo said. “It would have a disastrous effect on the economy,” he said.

Cuomo also noted that the only way to enforce the quarantine is at airports and train stations, but visitors from states like New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania “do not arrive by plane, but rather drive through hundreds of different routes.”
