New highs in new infections in the United States

With around 40,000 reported cases, the number of new corona infections in the USA reached a new high on Thursday. This has surpassed the previous record level of around 36,400 new infections on April 24, according to figures from John Hopkins University. The Washington Post previously reported over 39,327 new infections reported on Thursday.

States such as Texas, Arizona, Florida and New Mexico are now planning not to implement the announced easing measures for the time being. In Texas alone, a new record of 6,000 new cases was counted within 24 hours. This means that over 2.4 million infections with SARS-CoV-2 have become known in the USA. Over 124,000 people have died from the virus.

US President Trump downplayed the increasing number of cases before the new record became known. “If we didn’t test, we wouldn’t have any cases,” Trump said in a Fox News interview on Thursday evening (local time). The United States has so far tested around 30 million people for the virus, more than any other country in the world. Trump’s assessment is the result of the high number of detected infections in the United States. However, the CDC health agency estimates that only a fraction of the infections have probably been recorded to date. “For every case we’ve recorded, there were probably ten more infections,” said CDC director Robert Redfield on Thursday. Most of the renowned experts primarily blame Trump’s easing of corona restrictions in the states for the increasing number of cases. In view of the dramatic development, some states are therefore not planning to implement the announced easing measures for the time being. According to a report by the Washington Post, this applies to Texas, Arizona, Florida or New Mexico. In Texas alone, a new record of 6,000 new cases was reached within 24 hours. The capacities of the hospitals are already at the limit again. The billionaire Bill Gates criticized the government for its actions in the corona crisis. The US founder has “not even nearly” done enough to fight the epidemic, the Microsoft founder said at an event on CNN. Too little is tested, too few contacts are tracked and too few masks are worn. On Thursday evening (local time) it was also announced that the US Department of Justice had asked the Supreme Court to abolish “Obamacare”. President Trump had repeatedly criticized the expansion of health insurance introduced by his predecessor Barack Obama as “disaster” and had called for it to be lifted. (apa, dpa)
