New health tax: Vinkel prefers more funding from the basic budget

Minister of Health Ilze Hänķele (AP) welcomes the readiness of Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš (JV) and Minister of Finance Jānis Reirs (JV) to seek a solution for more funding for the health care sector, but she still believes that “the best option would be to allocate more funding from the basic budget”, “Delfi” informed the Ministry of Health (VM).

It has already been reported that on Wednesday, Reirs Latvijas Radio indicated that in Latvia, in order to improve the tax system, the possibility of introducing a health tax or health insurance in the amount of 5% is being assessed.

“As a minister, it is important for me that the funding model does not reduce the availability of health care for any group of the population, in order to comply with the comprehensive health care approach and not be a substitute for the functions of the State Revenue Service (SRS),” the minister emphasized.

Sheel revealed that the details of this plan were not presented.

With the introduction of health insurance or a health tax of 5%, the total tax burden on labor will not change, Reirs said earlier.

He explained that this health tax would consist of 1% of social contributions, 2% of solidarity tax and 2% of personal income tax (PIT).
