The eighth generation of the model (G60 – factory index) will be offered worldwide both with an all-electric drive in the “i5” version and, depending on the market region, as a plug-in hybrid, as well as with gasoline and diesel engines, including a 48-volt mild hybrid system.

The four-cylinder BMW 520i and 520d xDrive models will initially be available on the European market, but later – versions of the model with the latest generation plug-in hybrid drive, a completely new six-cylinder diesel engine, as well as the first BMW i5 with an electric drive.

Compared to the previous generation, the new model has grown in size – the length has increased by 97 mm, reaching 5060 mm, the width by 32 mm, reaching 1900 mm, and the height by 36 mm, reaching 1515 mm.

The front view of the BMW 5 Series sedan is highlighted by the innovative twin headlights and the BMW elliptical grille. The almost vertical LED elements serve as turn signals and daytime running lights. On the other hand, a forward-protruding BMW elliptical grille has a wide frame with additional BMW “Iconic Glow” contour lighting. The sporty overall image of the model is highlighted by clear side relief lines, black sills and door handles flush with the body.

Compared to the previous generation, in the new model, many control buttons were digitized, thus significantly reducing the number of different switches. The fully digital screen system includes a 12.3-inch instrument panel screen and a 14.9-inch multimedia screen. Another new element is the optional BMW Interactive Bar – an illuminated functional block with touch-sensitive control panels across the entire width of the instrument panel.

The new 5-series sedan is the first BMW model to feature eco-friendly materials in its interior as standard, including seat surfaces, instrument and door panels, as well as the steering wheel.

For electric car lovers, one option is the “BMW i5 M60 xDrive”, capable of delivering up to 601 hp (442 kW) of drive power combined with “M” performance and torque of up to 820 Nm when “M Sport Boost” or “M Launch Control” function. The car can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, and its maximum speed is electrically limited at 230 km/h.

The other variant of the 5 Series electric car is the “BMW i5 eDrive40”, whose electric motor drives the rear wheels and generates a maximum power of up to 340 hp (250 kW) with a maximum torque of up to 430 Nm. “BMW i5 eDrive40” accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.0 seconds, and its maximum speed is 193 km/h.

In addition to the efficient electric motors, the latest version of the adaptive recuperation system and smart heat pump technology, which maintains the selected interior air temperature, also help to ensure considerable range. According to the WLTP cycle, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive has a maximum range of 455 to 516 km on a full charge, while the i5 eDrive40 has a range of 497 to 582 km. In addition, with the “Max Range” function, if necessary, the range can be increased by up to 25%, limiting the power and driving speed and deactivating the comfort functions.

The new 5 Series sedan has a significantly expanded range of available systems for semi-automated driving and parking, such as “Driving Assistant Professional”, including steering and lane control assistance and distance control with the “Stop & Go” function. In the USA, Canada, as well as in Germany, the range of systems also includes “Highway Assistant”, which frees the driver from steering duties on highways with structurally separated direction lanes. For the first time in the world, the system of the new BMW 5 Series also includes “Active Lane Change Assistant” with eye confirmation, which means that now, to initiate the car to change lanes, it can be done by looking in the side mirror.

In Latvia, factory orders for the BMW 5 series sedan are already available. The “520d xDrive” can be ordered for the recommended retail price of the standard package, starting from 64,390 euros, the “i5 eDrive40” – 75,600 euros, and the “i5 M60 xDrive” – 103,000 euros.
