New foci of coronavirus reproduction found

A team of German scientists found out, that coronavirus of a new type of SARS-CoV-2 reproduces not only in the lungs of humans.

German researchers from the Bundeswehr Institute of Microbiology, the Charite Berlin Hospital and the Munich-Schwabing Clinic establishedthat a new type of coronavirus reproduces not only in the lungs. The upper respiratory tract and intestines are also the focus of the spread of coronavirus infection. In the samples of each studied patient with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19, the virus content in the samples from the nasopharynx was especially high during the first week after the detection of symptoms of the disease.

In addition, different strains of SARS-CoV-2 were found in the same patient with coronavirus infection in the upper respiratory tract and lungs, which indicates their independent development. Scientists claim that urine and blood never tested positive for SARS-CoV-2.

German experts believe that the presence of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in the upper respiratory tract contributes to an invisible transmission of infection from patients with a mild to healthy form, and this is a serious problem. Yesterday, the number of cases of infection with SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus worldwide exceeded one million people. Of these, 52,026 patients died, more than 206 thousand people managed to recover.
