New elevators in line 1 of station 181

“I am happy. It is very spacious, comfortable, I feel that it was a necessity and it helps a lot,” said user Ema.

As of this Wednesday, the historic 1 train station on 181 Street has new elevators.

The MTA reported that construction work was completed in less than a year, ahead of schedule thanks to the reduction in passenger numbers due to the pandemic. Many users shared Ema’s enthusiasm.

“They are very beautiful, perfect. Which is what the population needed to have more space to move, because the ones that were there before were tremendous, very saturated, one did not fit and there was a long queue. The line reached the stairs on the other side and now you can see that everything was better, “said another user.

“We hadn’t been able to use it for a year now and walking is a long way off. Perfect,” added another young user.

The elevators replace machinery that was more than 80 years old, severely damaged by decades of water seeping into the station. NYC Transit says the new elevators:

  • They will provide a faster and more reliable service
  • They will reduce overcrowding with wider doors
  • They will provide greater security with two cameras per elevator
  • They use new technology to report failures in real time

In addition, they have a backup generator so that users can go out if there is a power failure at the station. But not all passengers are satisfied.

“They are replaced and everything is very beautiful, but what a pity it is because we already have homeless people and that damages everything,” said another user.

“It’s great, but if it had hit the road it would have really been a success. They would need to do that kind of remodeling,” added another user.

The other elevator construction project on line A, which also serves this area, is still ongoing.
