Kinshasa – In Congo, a new focus of Ebola infection has shattered hope of an impending end to the epidemic. “I can confirm a new Ebola outbreak in Mbandanka,” said Health Minister Eteni Longondo on Monday.

The new Ebola wave in the west of the country has already killed four people, the minister said after examining samples at the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB).

The outbreak of the dangerous disease – the tenth so far in the Central African giant empire – was declared in early August 2018. In total, more than 2,200 people have died since then, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The outbreak was particularly difficult to control because of the numerous militias fighting in the area. In addition, there is mistrust among Ebola helpers. The most serious Ebola outbreak to date was in 2014/2015 in West Africa, when more than 11,000 people were killed.
