New criteria have been set for the Oscar for Best Film

The academy, considered the highest institution in the Hollywood film industry, announced on Tuesday that of the 2024 Oscar-nominated films in the “Best Film” category, at least two of the four new criteria will be met to improve recruitment practices. in the film industry and beyond.

The first criterion is that the film must feature a prominent actor from an under-represented group and that 30% of the minority must be played by minorities, or that the film must address issues related to these groups.

The second criterion requires curtain managers or technicians to be from historically under-represented groups, including women, LGBT people and people with disabilities.

The last two criteria relate to internship opportunities for these groups and diversity in film marketing and distribution teams.

The US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has long been criticized for its lack of diversity among its members and Oscar nominees and laureates.

The academy also recently invited 819 new members to vote for this year’s Oscars. 45% of the new members are women and 35% are not white.
