New cases of virus close more than 100 school buildings in New York City, send students away – NBC New York

Positive cases of the coronavirus prompted New York officials to close more than 100 school buildings on Monday, News 4 has learned.

The Department of Education plans to close 128 buildings, which are made up of classrooms for younger students who attend in person as well as those in learning bridges and early childhood day care centers. (A list of affected school buildings was not immediately available.)

City Hall said there was no plan for a wider district-wide building closure, while state data for the city sits below the 9% threshold that would trigger automatic shutdown by the state.

New York, like other parts of the state, has seen a significant increase in the number of cases and deaths amid a winter outbreak of the coronavirus.

On Sunday, the New York State coronavirus dashboard showed New York’s seven-day moving average at 6.24%.

Kindergarten and elementary school students were allowed to resume in-person learning in early December after the city closed school buildings for the second time.

Middle and high school students have taken distance learning courses and still do not have a return to class schedule, the mayor said he hopes the middle school students will return in late January.
