New case in Wuhan, China, after more than a month without registration of contagions

China today raised the level of epidemiological risk in a district of Wuhan (center), after the discovery of a new case of covid-19, the first in more than a month in this city, which was the birthplace of the current pandemic.

The National Health Commission announced that a new case was detected in this city located in central China, being an 89-year-old man living in Dongxihu district, in northwest Wuhan.

The city of Wuhan, where the new coronavirus was first detected last December, has not reported any cases of the covid-19 disease since April 3.

In view of this new case, local authorities decided to raise the level of epidemiological risk in this district from “low” to “medium”.

Wuhan, a city with about 11 million inhabitants, is now considered a “low risk” area since it was lifted on April 8, a quarantine period of more than two months and people’s daily routine gradually began to be resumed.

For example, high school students returned to classes last Wednesday – wearing personal protective masks and under strict sanitary measures – after four months of forced vacation due to the virus.

In addition to this case in Wuhan, China reported today having registered, in the last 24 hours, another 13 new cases of infection in the country, most of which were diagnosed in the northeast of the country, where the city of Shulan was quarantined.

This is the first time since May 1 that the country has announced a daily number of two-digit contagions.

In total terms, and since the beginning of the crisis, China (excluding the territories of Hong Kong and Macau) has officially registered 82,901 cases, including 4,633 fatalities and 78,120 recovered people.

On Saturday, China admitted that the new coronavirus revealed “gaps” in the Chinese health system and its mechanisms for preventing infectious diseases.

“The fight against the covid-19 epidemic was a great test for the country’s system and governance capacities,” said Chinese Vice Minister of Health, Li Bin, on Saturday.

The official admitted at the same time that the outbreak “also revealed that China still has gaps in its systems and mechanisms for preventing and controlling major epidemics and in its public health system”.

The Chinese deputy health minister’s statements came at a time when the United States has intensified accusations and criticisms of Beijing, with the US administration saying Chinese officials have hidden information about the virus and mismanaged the crisis.
