Never throw away the citrus peel

Oranges, tangerines, lemons and all citrus fruits in general have really intoxicating and intense smells. It is no coincidence that citrus fruits are among the most used essences for environmental perfumers, home cleaning products and personal perfumes. These essences are mainly contained in the oil of the skins.

It is possible to exploit this oil in various ways to be able to fully enjoy its smell and taste in a completely natural way. This is why citrus peels should never be thrown away and what they can be used for.

The heated peel

The peels of our citrus fruits can be exploited and recycled in many ways. First of all they can be used to perfume the environment. In fact, it is enough to throw them into the fireplace or place them on the grate of the stove. In the absence of the latter, the peels can very well be placed on the hot radiators. The perfume will immediately fill the room and, especially in the case of orange, will give the room a warm and relaxing atmosphere.

The skins treated in this way dry out. However, their use may not be limited to perfume only. In fact, by previously cutting the peel of the shape we prefer and putting it to heat as we have seen, we will obtain beautiful decorations. Stars, hearts and circles to be used in a flower arrangement, to brighten up an environment or even to decorate theChristmas tree.

One use in the kitchen

Never throw away citrus peel because they can also be useful in the kitchen. Peels can also be candied to create a dessert or to decorate cakes and drinks, and are also perfect as a gift. Just cut the orange peel into thin strips, put them in a bowl and cover them with water. They should be left to soak between 4 and 6 days, changing the water if necessary. When they are ready they must be drained and weighed. Put the peels in a saucepan, together with sugar and water in the same quantity as our peels. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, until the water has dried and the strips are candied. On a shelf spread them out and let them dry for about an hour. If you wish, you can also decorate them with melted chocolate.
