Nevada Highway Patrol Facilitates Move of 909,489-Pound Transformer
A massive transformer, weighing approximately 909,489 pounds and stretching 250 feet in length, required a specialized escort from the Nevada Highway Patrol along a key corridor of Northern Nevada highways on Tuesday. The ”Super load” impacted travel on US 50 Alternate between Hazen and Fernley, US 95 Alternate in Fernley, and I-80 between Fernley and Lovelock.
The oversized shipment, measuring 20 feet wide and 20 feet 3 inches tall, necessitated a unique maneuver – traveling eastbound on I-80 past the Nightingale exit before reversing course to approach it from the westbound side – to safely navigate the route. While the transport caused anticipated delays for motorists, the operation concluded successfully by 11:40 a.m., reopening all affected roadways.
The transport began around 6:30 a.m. and moved at approximately 12 miles per hour. The Nevada state police coordinated the movement from Hazen to the I-80 Nightingale exit, a critical step in delivering essential infrastructure components.
“We are all done, and the highway is open! The ‘Super Load’ has been escorted off the highway.Thank you for everyone’s patience as we assisted in moving this massive transformer from Hazen, nevada, to the I-80 Nightingale exit,” the Nevada State Police announced on their Facebook page.
