Netizens Discuss Taxes with Customs and Excise Officers, Prompting Sri Mulyani’s Response: A Timeline

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – An employee of the Directorate General Customs Ministry of Finance Widy Heriyanto viral on social media Twitter because of his comments on netizens’ comments which were considered inappropriate.

Widy Heriyanto was previously viral on Twitter for commenting on the tweets of Kris Antoni, a developer game. Kris is known to confide in social media because his award trophy was taxed when he arrived in Jakarta.

What’s the chronology like?

At first, Kris responded to Fatimah Zahratunnisa’s tweet, who complained that she was being charged Rp. 4 million in tax on trophies sent to Indonesia. The trophy was won by Fatimah in a singing contest on Japanese TV.

Kris admitted that he experienced something similar in 2013 when the developer studio gamehis @togeproductions won award Flash Game Summit di San Francisco. “But because we can’t go to receive the award, the trophy is sent to Indonesia, when it arrives in Jakarta, the trophy is subject to more than 1 million taxes,” Kris tweeted via account @kerissakti, Wednesday, March 22, 2023.

Netizens are confused about free goods but are taxed

He was even more confused when he protested the tax imposition. If you want to protest, you just say ‘imported goods want to buy or free gifts are still subject to tax’. How about free taxable? Because ordinary people don’t understand anything, we just do it. During 2011-2013 we won awards 3 years in a row in America. Yes, just imagine how much the tax is,” wrote Chris.

He then brought up the difficulty of getting a chance to make game for the Nintendo Switch at some point in the past. At that time, his company was the only developer game from Indonesia who got DevKit, hardware that can be used by developers to create game related console platforms.

But when he brought in the DevKit, which he called the super-secret special tool, he was even thought that the customs officials would sell it in Indonesia. “Similarly, I was thought to want to sell. I was asked for SNI for everything. I even went on TV, my face was blurred, it looked like a criminal,” cuit Kris.

Though, according to Kris, without the Devkit tool, a number game Indonesia, like A Space for the Unbound, won’t be on consoles. “Devkit is a proprietary technology that cannot be replicated in Indonesia. If Indonesia wants to progress, access to technology like this must be made easier. This is even hampered by the country itself.”
