Netflix: Native Windows 10 app is to be replaced by a PWA

Many services have theirs Windows 10 app already replaced by a Progressive Web App (PWA). The streaming provider too Netflix should work on such an application. With the changeover, however, some functions could be omitted, since these are more difficult to implement.

A tweet from Aggiornamenti Lumia according to an app called “NetflixHWA” in the Microsoft Store. It is said to have been a test version for the “Netflix Hosted Web App”. This indicates that the streaming provider is currently working on a PWA. As soon as Netflix releases a final version of the PWA, support for the existing Windows 10 app will cease completely a short time later.

PWA also has disadvantages

Compared to native applications, PWAs do not only have advantages. Under Windows 10, a PWA does not have the ability to access the file system without restrictions. Netflix requires such access for the offline functions, however, since content on the data medium has to be buffered. With the PWA it should no longer be possible to download films and series in order to be able to watch them without an internet connection.

Software is still in development

When the Netflix app will be replaced by the new PWA remains unclear. At the moment the software is still in development, so extensive tests should follow. In the future, many more Windows 10 apps could also be replaced by PWAs, since the development is easier and can therefore be carried out significantly cheaper.
