Elaf from Beirut: Although it has not yet been shown, more than 266,000 people are calling for the banning of the movie “Cuties” due to be released on Netflix on September 9, claiming that it presents children as a sexual commodity and promotes pedophilia, through a petition published on the Change.org website.

The crisis began when Netflix launched an ad campaign for a French children’s film, “Cuteies,” last Friday night, with a different poster than the original poster for the film, which won the Marjan Sundance Film Award.

Controversial Netflix poster French movie original poster

The film is directed by the young director Maymouna Doukoure, whose short film Mamans had previously won the Cesars in 2017. In the same year, the script for her film “Qutiz” won an award at the same festival, which gave her the opportunity to find funding for its industry. She participated in the completed film this year and won the jury prize for best direction. Netflix caught him and bought the rights to display it on its platform.

The story of the film revolves around “Amy”, an 11-year-old Senegalese girl, whose attention is drawn to a group of girls who have a dance troupe in her school. She asks them to join them, and she is drawn into the lifestyle of her new friends, with their behavior, the way they dress, the openness of their upbringing, and her awareness rapidly increases With her rising femininity, far from the customs and traditions of her family, which causes an intellectual clash between them and her mother.

The content of the movie does not resemble the poster that Netflix presented to a group of young girls in dance costumes, taking on erotic poses, which caused a wave of strong condemnation that prompted the giant company to change the poster, and I apologized for this mistake in a tweet published through the platform’s account on Twitter, saying: “We deeply regret the work of art. The decent that we used. It was not good, and it was not representative of this French film that won an award at Sundance. We have now updated the pictures and description. “

Before this mistake, the film would have gone unnoticed on the platform, like other new works, but without a doubt, after all the hype that occurred, which provided free publicity for it, the film will witness a turnout if it is not out of interest, it will be out of curiosity.
