A total of 305,409 people in our country have been infected with the virus since the start of the pandemic. That is no less than 17,709 more than yesterday. It’s alright in this figure it is not about infections on one day, but about reports of infections from several days that have arrived at Sciensano since yesterday.

On Wednesday, October 21, the most recent day for which consolidated daily figures are available, 14,288 new infections were detected. On October 20, there were 17,508 new cases and 14,888 the day before. The infections of October 20 drastically break the absolute record day figure.

The figures after October 21 are not yet definitive, but for now it is already 10,168 cases for Thursday, October 22, and 3,117 for Friday, October 23.

Of incidence, the number of infections per 100,000 inhabitants over the past 14 days has risen to 1,207.9 from 1,118.6 yesterday. As a reminder, the European Center for Disease Control (ECDC) uses 240 as the highest alert threshold.

Hospital admissions

Yesterday, 590 patients were hospitalized with Covid-19, a daily rate that had not been as high since the end of March, during the first peak. The seven-day average thus rises to 433 hospital admissions per day, an increase of 85 percent compared to a week ago.

Currently, 4,401 (+8 percent) corona patients are in hospital. Among them, 708 people are in intensive care (+12 percent).

An average of 64,941 tests are administered per day. Only people with symptoms are still being tested, or people without symptoms with a cluster outbreak, but for now the number of tests continues to rise.

The positivity ratio, the number of people who test positive in relation to the total number of tests, is now 18.3 percent.

The World Health Organization (WHO) regards 5 percent as a ‘threshold’ to be able to consider the epidemic under control.
