Kolda Region Intensifies Cervical Cancer Fight with Awareness Day
In a proactive move to combat cervical cancer, the Kolda Regional Health Directorate organized a special awareness day, coupled with crucial screenings and treatments. The initiative offered immediate support to women, emphasizing prevention through vaccination and early detection.
Successful Health Campaign
A total of 161 women received consultations during the Saturday event held at the Sikilo West health post. Remarkably, seven women exhibited precancerous lesions and received immediate support via thermoablation. Additionally, the campaign provided free infection treatments to 41 women, with six cases referred for further evaluation.

“This campaign also made it possible to treat 41 women with infections free of charge, and 6 cases have been referred for more in-depth examinations,”
—Dr. Yaya Baldé, Regional Director of Health
Cervical cancer remains a significant health threat, with approximately 604,000 new cases and 342,000 deaths globally in 2020 (World Health Organization).
Vaccination Efforts and Community Engagement
The health directorate highlighted the pivotal role of vaccination in preventing cervical cancer. Between January and May 2025, the Sikilo West health post vaccinated 607 girls, aged nine to fourteen, against the human papillomavirus (HPV). These numbers suggest that the program has widespread support from local populations.
The Kolda Regional Health Directorate plans to continue organizing similar events, to ensure early detection, timely intervention, and, ultimately, save lives. These initiatives highlight their commitment to curbing female cancers.
