NBA players agree to a big drop in wages. Sport

The NBA, whose season has been suspended due to the coronavirus, and the players’ union (NBPA) have reached an agreement to withhold 25% of each basketball player’s biweekly wages starting May 15.

This agreement prevails “In the event of the definitive cancellation of the 2019-2020 regular season or the play-offs due to the Covid-19 pandemic”, said the NBA in its press release.

“Thanks to this agreement, and in order to provide players with a more progressive pay cut schedule, 25% pay cuts will take effect on the May 15 payout”, she adds.

The body specifies that this agreement prevails if the “force majeure” clause of the collective agreement, which can be invoked in the context of an epidemic, was activated with the cancellation of regular season games.

End of season behind closed doors?

The final amount of players’ lost wages will depend on the number of matches canceled. NBA boss Adam Silver has said he will not make a decision until May.

NBA players, who are paid fortnightly, will receive their May 1 salary in full. Each of the 30 NBA teams must play between 15 and 19 games to reach the end of the 82 in the regular season.

According to several media, the NBA, whose season has been interrupted since March 11, hopes that a resumption of competition will be possible in July and is studying a large number of scenarios for this, favoring meetings in camera and going as far as consider the option of bringing together all of the franchises concerned in a single city to compete for play-offs.
