The Guardian writes that Tokayev “used repression” to remove Nazarbayev and his family from power, but “the power struggle continues.”
Ermukhamet Yertysbaev, a former adviser to Nazarbayev, also spoke about the negotiations between representatives of the former and current authorities in Kazakhstan. He believes that “the era of Nazarbayev is over.”

The media wrote that during the protests the politician and his family left the country, however, on January 8, his spokesman stated that Nazarbayev is in the capital of Kazakhstan and provides support to Tokayev.
