Naval exercise error in Iran causes the death of 19 seafarers | International | News

Dubai –

An Iranian warship accidentally hit another with a missile during maneuvers, killing 19 sailors and injuring 15 others, the Iranian Navy said Monday.

The incident took place during military maneuvers in the Gulf of Oman, a sensitive waterway that connects to the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil passes. Iran regularly conducts maneuvers in the area.

The Jamaran frigate fired on a training target released by a support ship, the Konarak. However, the support ship remained too close to the target and was hit, state IRIB television said.

“The incident took place on the perimeter of the Iranian port of Bandar-e Jask, in the Gulf of Oman, during the Iranian Navy maneuvers on Sunday afternoon, in which 19 sailors died and 15 others were wounded,” he said. state television, citing the Navy.

The Fars news agency quoted an unidentified military officer who denied some information in the Iranian media that the Konarak had sunk. The Navy statement said they were conducting investigations into the cause of the incident, the ISNA student news agency said.

IRIB said the Dutch-made ship Konarak equipped with four cruise missiles was acquired before Iran’s 1979 Islamic revolution and had been overhauled in 2018.

The accident takes place in the climate of greater tension between Iran and the United States generated since in 2018 the United States withdrew from a nuclear agreement between the main world powers and the Islamic republic and later resumed sanctions against Tehran. (I)
