NATO warns of protracted war in Ukraine and will prepare for it

Joanne said NATO countries need to invest more in defense, increase military industrial production and use new technologies to prepare for future wars.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the NATO Military Committee meeting in Brussels will discuss the possibilities of allies to increase military support to Ukraine in the coming months and discuss how to strengthen their own defense. The commanders of the armed forces of 30 NATO member states, as well as Finland and Sweden, as well as the chairman of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer, the Supreme Commander of the NATO European Forces, General Christopher Cavoli, and the Commander of the Allied Transformation Command, General Philippe Lavigne, are participating in the meeting.

There is no sign that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s goals have changed, Joanne said, adding that Russia has mobilized more than 200,000 additional troops.

“2023 will be a tough year and we must support Ukraine as long as it takes,” emphasized Joanne.

The Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Miley, met with the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Army Valery Zaluzhnyi in southeastern Poland on Tuesday. The meeting place was kept secret.

Milijs is expected to present Zaluzhnyi’s concerns to the commanders of other NATO countries at the military meeting.

Milij’s meeting with Zaluzhny was arranged at short notice after it became clear on Monday that Zaluzhny would not be able to attend the NATO military meeting in person. He is expected to participate remotely via video call on Thursday.

Milli’s spokesman said Milli plans to present NATO commanders with “tactical and operational conditions on the battlefield and military needs.”

Bauer emphasized at the NATO Military Committee meeting that the alliance must continue to change in order to face future challenges.

“The war has also shown us that you have to be able to fight tomorrow’s battles today as well as yesterday’s,” Bauer said, noting that “bits and bots are as important as mud and blood” in warfare today.

Bauer reminded that the last meeting of the NATO-Russia Council took place about a year ago and both sides were able to sit at the same table at that time, but after Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, the world has changed.

NATO has proven that it can quickly increase and relocate its military presence when needed, Bauer said, and assured that the alliance is ready to support Ukraine for as long as necessary.

Putin “underestimated the capabilities and courage of the Ukrainian people, armed forces and leadership, and underestimated our unity and our solidarity with Ukraine,” Bauer said.

Thanks to NATO’s support, the situation on the battlefield has changed, and this support will continue, the chairman of NATO’s Military Committee announced.
