BRUSSELS – A top NATO general has suggested establishing a presence NATO from Romania and Bulgaria , according to German media report Der Spiegel. Previously, Russia had asked NATO to limit their operations in Eastern Europe.

One of NATO’s most senior generals has suggested the alliance should deploy troops in Bulgaria and Romania, following Russia’s military buildup near the Ukrainian border, German newspaper Der Spiegel reported on Saturday (12/18/2021).

Der Spiegel said the plan, drawn up by NATO Allied Commander Europe Tod Wolters, would essentially expand the alliance’s “Forward Presence Enhancement” mission. It has also deployed troops to the Baltic states and eastern Poland.

The magazine said it had “information” that Wolters had “called for strengthening NATO’s eastern borders” during a secret videoconference with military leaders of “partner countries,” adding that the proposal would apply to “expand NATO’s presence (to Romania and Bulgaria). .”

NATO itself declined to comment on the report in Der Spiegel. Currently more than 100,000 Russian troops have been deployed to Russian territory in northern, eastern and southern Ukraine, a military buildup that has increased tensions between Russia, Ukraine and NATO.

Ukrainian officials have asked the alliance for military assistance to possibly defend itself against a Russian military attack.

“The Alliance will continually assess the need to further adjust our posture, our presence, also in the southeast of the region, as we need to ensure that we can always protect and defend allies against any attack and threat,” said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

Amid tensions, a pair of nuclear-capable Russian long-range bombers patrolled the Belarusian skies on Saturday on a mission meant to strengthen defense ties between the two allies.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the two Tu-22M3s flew the four-hour mission to train “to perform joint tasks with the Belarusian air and air defense forces.”
