NATO appeals to the Russian Federation on the eve of major exercises

NATO will follow the West-2021 exercise

Stoltenberg calls on the Russian authorities to be open during the West-2021 exercises.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg appealed to Russia on the eve of the West 2021 exercises, reports Reuters.

In his words, Russia should behave in a predictable and transparent way during exercises.

“We saw earlier that the number of troops participating in the exercise is significantly higher than announced,” Stoltenberg said.

NATO Secretary General called on the Russian Federation to fulfill its obligations in accordance with the Vienna Document – an international agreement governing military exercises in Europe.

NATO cites the example that in 2017 the Russian Federation attracted up to 70,000 military personnel to the West’s exercises, but only 12,700 people were announced.

“The reality is that since the end of the Cold War, Russia has never opened exercises for mandatory checks. Therefore, we will be vigilant,” Stoltenberg said.

The day before, the Kremlin once again threatened that they would be forced to go to countermeasures if NATO troops approach the borders of the Russian Federation – if Ukraine becomes a member of the Alliance.
