the NFPET functions similarly to Incident Management Teams, serving as an emergency resource to meet the specific wildfire prevention goals of the host unit. Their primary objective is to collaborate with local agencies and community groups to promote vital wildfire safety messaging and actively reduce the incidence of human-caused wildfires.

Francisco Salazar, Prevention Program Manager for the U.S. Forest Service Southwestern Region, emphasized the importance of this initiative. “this is an exciting opportunity to have a team arrive proactively to help bolster the Cibola National Forest and Grasslands’ existing prevention program and provide training opportunities to build local prevention capacity,” salazar stated. The NFPET’s efforts are summarized by the campaign slogan, “Spark Safety, Not Wildfires,” which highlights the focus on preventing wildfires caused by human activities such as unattended campfires, debris burning, and equipment use.
