Nathaniel “Nate” Holden, a towering figure in Los Angeles politics, passed away Wednesday at the age of 95, according to his family. Holden’s career was marked by a relentless drive and unwavering self-belief, qualities that propelled him from his humble beginnings in Macon, Ga., to the highest echelons of power in California.

Early Life and Defiance

Born in 1929, Holden’s early life was shaped by the stark realities of racial segregation in the Deep South. He recounted hearing the Georgia governor vow to suppress Black people, who were denied basic rights and frequently enough faced violence. This injustice fueled a lifelong commitment to fighting for equality.

Holden’s defiance manifested early. He recalled throwing rocks into whites-only swimming pools and boldly declaring his ambition to become president to a white couple while working in their backyard. These acts of rebellion foreshadowed his future as a political force.

From military Service to Aerospace

At 16, Holden enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as a military police officer in post-World War II Germany. upon his return, he aspired to become a draftsman, but faced discouragement due to his race. Despite being told such a job was unattainable for a Black man, Holden persevered.

he eventually gained admission to a training program for veterans, studying design and engineering while completing high school. This determination led him to a career in the aerospace industry, ultimately bringing him to California.

Political Ascent and Legislative Achievements

Holden’s political journey began wiht the California Democratic Council. Even though an initial congressional bid failed, he rose to become president of the reform group. In 1974, he was elected to the California Senate, were he championed landmark legislation.

He also spearheaded the effort to require California’s public schools to commemorate martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, solidifying his commitment to civil rights. After an unsuccessful second run for Congress, Holden served as assistant chief deputy to L.A. County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn.

City Council Tenure: A Maverick’s Legacy

In 1987, after multiple campaign losses, Holden set his sights on the Los Angeles City Council. His tenure was marked by a willingness to challenge the status quo and a fierce dedication to his constituents.

I don’t think I’ve ever lost a race. Maybe I wasn’t elected, but I didn’t lose the race. And every time I ran a race, I think the community benefited.

Holden represented the 10th District, advocating for the poor and middle class in South Central and southwestern Los Angeles. He secured funding for increased police foot patrols to combat crime and improve community relations. Known for his relentless pursuit of improvements, he earned the nickname “Stop sign Holden” for his efforts to enhance pedestrian safety.

His colleagues, however, often saw him as a tough figure.He frequently clashed with othre council members, openly criticizing them and voting against the majority. Despite this, he remained popular among his constituents, who viewed him as a champion of their interests.

Nate works harder with his constituents and other residents of Los Angeles than he does at pleasing his colleagues. He has street smarts and is very populist.

Mayoral Bid and Community Engagement

In 1989, holden challenged incumbent mayor Tom Bradley. During the campaign, he launched a pioneering gun buyback program, offering $300 for assault rifles. Although he lost the election, his strong showing demonstrated his political prowess.

He’s a fighter. If I was ever in a bar fight, I would sure hope that Nate Holden was on the bar stool next to me.

Holden also cultivated strong ties with the Korean American community, securing campaign contributions in exchange for assistance with liquor permits in Koreatown. Holden’s career was not without controversy. He faced multiple sexual harassment allegations in the 1990s, resulting in legal battles and meaningful city expenses. He was also fined for campaign finance violations, though he maintained he was held to a higher standard.

Despite these challenges, Holden remained active in the community after retiring from the City Council in 2003. At 92, he served on the board of the South Coast Air Quality Management District, demonstrating his enduring commitment to public service.

Nate Holden is survived by his sons, Reginald Holden and Chris Holden, and several grandchildren. His wife, Fannie Louise Holden, passed away in 2013. Holden’s legacy is one of unwavering determination,fierce advocacy,and a deep commitment to the people of Los Angeles.
