The NASA Curiosity rover captured the highest resolution panoramic image of the surface of Mars. It is made up of more than 1 000 photographs that were taken close to Thanksgiving in 2019 and were carefully assembled during the following months.

This image, from the landscape of Mars, has 1.8 billion pixels.

“While many in our team were at home enjoying turkey, Curiosity produced this feast for the eyes,” said scientist Ashwin Vasavada of the Curiosity project at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The rover had a rare opportunity to photograph its surroundings from the same point of view several days in a row.

“This is the first time during the mission that we dedicate our operations to capture a 360-degree panoramic image.”

Therefore, it took more than six and a half hours for several days to take the individual shots. Also, to ensure that the lighting was constant, the images were captured only between noon and 2 p.m. (local time of Mars) and the telephoto of the Mast camera was used.

In this panoramic image you can see the following points of the red planet:

  • The edge of the Gale Crater
  • The Slangpos Crater measuring 4.8 kilometers
  • Vera Rubin Crest
  • A location called Central Butte inside the Crater Gal
  • The sharp Mount Sharp.

Curiosity is currently the only rover that operates on Mars.
