Merdeka.com – NASA astronomers discovered an exoplanet nearly the size of Earth named LP 791-18 d. This planet outside the solar system is filled with volcanoes on its surface.

Through the journal Nature, the findings describe the volcanism of exoplanet LP 791–18 d and its potential to support an atmosphere.

The team of astronauts is led by Merrin Peterson of the University of Montreal’s Institute for Exoplanet Research (iREx) who is employed by NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS).

The exoplanet, which is slightly larger than Earth, is located 90 light years south of the constellation Crater and orbits a small red star.

The profile of this exoplanet makes researchers suspect the possibility of being inhabited by living beings.

A distinctive characteristic of LP 791–18 d is tidal locking, a phenomenon in which one side of the planet is always facing the star.

Because of this, the side of LP 791–18 d facing the star has extreme temperatures and cannot be drained by water.

On the other hand, the research team also found a lot of volcanic activity from the planet, allowing water to condense on the other side of the planet and making water possible.

The exoplanet LP 791–18 d also frequently crosses paths with LP 791–18 c, affecting the planet’s gravity and trajectory, as well as creating friction in the planet’s interior. That’s why there is volcanic activity on the planet LP 791–18 d.

This discovery attracted the attention of other researchers. Researchers believe that the exoplanet LP 791–18 d is a good candidate for future atmospheric studies.
