NASA Confirms An Asteroid Will Someday Hit Earth

Jakarta

Asteroid is a common celestial body found up there. Sometimes the asteroids hit Earth, both small and sometimes large ones. The question is, do humans need to worry about the threat?

Not long ago, NASA released a video with the title Will an asteroid someday crash into Earth? The answer is YES. Similar things have happened in the past and will also be the case in the future.

“Yes, asteroids hit Earth in the course of their history and will happen again. Space dust, meteors, even small asteroids hit Earth very often,” answered NASA scientist Kelly Fast, reported by Cnet, Friday (27/8/2021).

But people need not worry, because asteroids that cause impact or harm to the Earth’s surface are very rare events. “This happens on a time scale of hundreds to thousands of millions of years,” Kelly said.

Of course crash asteroid The most famous is the one that wiped out the dinosaurs about 66 million years ago. So, there is no need to worry about such a great event that will happen again in the near future.

In July, researchers from the Southwest Research Institute calculated that an asteroid collision similar to the dinosaur catastrophe occurred only once in 250 million years. That is, the chances are very small.

NASA itself and other space agencies monitor the movement of asteroids and predict how they will affect the planet. For at least the next century, it is predicted that there will be no major danger posed by an asteroid collision.

However, precautionary steps are still being taken. NASA is testing how to destroy asteroid which one day could threaten the planet, for example by crashing a plane into the object. So don’t worry!
