NASA Asks Public to Help Name Stalkers on Mission Artemis I

Suara.com – Mission Artemis I NASA will send the Orion spacecraft around the Moon.

Having finished assembling the SLS rocket, NASA is now asking the public for help in naming “stowaway” in misi Artemis I.

The stowaway is a human-shaped mannequin, which will be flown on the mission.

NASA announces Name the Artemis Moonikin Challenge to decide what name should be given to the mannequin.

The unmanned test flight is targeting take-off by the end of this year.

The mannequins will allow NASA to gather data on how space travel on those missions could impact the actual human body.

NASA has narrowed down the name choices to eight, namely Ace, Wargo, Delos, Duhart, Campos, Shackleton, Montgomery, and Rigel.

Reported from CNET, Thursday (17/6/2021), every name has a meaning. Ace stands for “Artemis Crew Explorer”.

While Duhart is dedicated to Irene Duhart Long, chief medical officer at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.

The name “Montgomery” is not for Montgomery Scott from Star Trek.

But honors Julius Montgomery as the first African-American to work as a technical professional at NASA’s Cape Canaveral space facility.

The names will be posted on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for voting starting on June 16.

The final vote will take place on June 28 and the official announcement on June 29.

According to NASA, the mannequins on the Artemis I mission will be equipped with two radiation sensors and a seat sensor to record acceleration and vibrations throughout the mission, as Orion circles the Moon and returns to Earth.

The mannequin will also not be completely alone.

He will be accompanied by two models of human bodies, which NASA calls “phantoms”, and are made of materials that mimic human bones, soft tissues and organs of adult women.

NASA’s long-term plan is to send the first female astronauts and the first people of color to the surface of the Moon.

But before sending astronauts, NASA had to test SLS and Orion via the Artemis I mission.

The two “phantoms” themselves already have names by NASA, which are called Zolgar and Helga.
