The Vatican received Nancy PELOSI…
The Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives: Nancy Pelosi, 82, elected for 35 years in California and favorite target of the conservative right and Fox news, Donald Trump’s favorite news channel.
Yesterday, she was received by Pope Francis himself, who blessed her, before going to a papal mass in Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome where she received communion. It was the visitors present who noted his presence in the public.
Immediately the photo of a smiling and attentive Nancy Pelosi was posted on social networks. We knew that “Madam Speaker” was a devout Catholic, but this communion is a transgression, even a papal provocation!
To understand, you have to go back to May 20. That day, the Archbishop of San Francisco, Msgr. Salvatore Cordileone – one of the most conservative in the United States – forbade Mrs. Pelosi to receive communion in his diocese. In his edict, the prelate explained:
“After several times trying to explain to her the harm she was doing by advocating for abortion rights, I decided that Mrs. Pelosi could not receive communion unless she recanted, confessed and received the absolution” for these sins.
Now, Mrs. Pelosi happens to live in this diocese!
So when the pope blessed her in Rome and then let her take communion at Saint Peter, he very clearly disavowed his Californian archbishop. A pope who, moreover, was already expressed on the subject:
“I have never refused the Eucharist to anyone” and he added that the decision whether or not to receive Communion from politicians who supported abortion should be taken from a pastoral and not a political point of view”. And pan on the miter of Bishop Cordileone!
A Roman communion which comes just after the questioning of the federal right to abortion by the Supreme Court…
However, it turns out that the Supreme Court is not only very conservative since Donald Trump appointed three judges and swung the majority to the Republican side; but she is, in addition, incredibly Catholic!
Of the 9 “justices”, 6 are Catholic!
That is to say two-thirds of the Court even though only a small quarter of Americans call themselves papists. If we add that Joe Biden is himself a Catholic, it starts to do a lot!
However, only one, Ms. Sonia Sotomayor, is classified as progressive. The other 5 voted to repeal Roe vs. Wade. A very uncomfortable situation for Pope Francis who wants a Church open to society and above all, depoliticized.
However, four American dioceses have followed the archbishop of San Francisco and have also decided to ban politicians openly defending abortion from communion. Francis’ gesture at the Vatican was therefore particularly symbolic.
He received and blessed Nancy Pelosi and, through her, all the Catholics who do not recognize themselves either in the decision of the Supreme Court or in that of Bishop Cordileone. A gesture of appeasement and a warning to his misguided prelates: the boss is me!
