Teen Dies After Car Hits House Near Kumeū
A fatal single-vehicle crash near Kumeū has claimed the life of a teenager. The incident occurred on Coatesville-Riverhead Highway on June 27, leaving several others injured and prompting an ongoing investigation.
Victim Identified
Police have identified the deceased as 16-year-old Elliot Ellis New, from Whangamatā. He was a passenger in the car that crashed at 8:20 p.m. on June 27.
Investigation Underway
Superintendent Nalia Hassan stated that multiple investigations are being conducted to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash. She emphasized the thoroughness of the process, noting:

Hassan expressed condolences to the family, saying:

She also assured that Elliot’s family will be kept informed as the inquiry progresses. According to the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, provisional data shows that 172 people have died on New Zealand roads so far in 2025, up from 163 at the same time last year (NZTA).
Hospital Admissions
Following the crash, four teenagers were hospitalized. While three were stabilized, New succumbed to his injuries and died on July 2.
