NAM is fined 125,000 euros for shortcomings in the event of leaks | NOW

The Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM) has been fined two fines totaling 125,000 euros on Wednesday, the Public Prosecution Service reports (IF). According to the OM, NAM has not taken sufficient measures to prevent leaks.

On October 3, 2018, 30 cubic meters of natural gas condensate, a hazardous liquid substance released during natural gas extraction, leaked into a channel at a NAM location in Farmsum (Groningen).

A criminal investigation has shown that the NAM did not respond correctly to two reports that warned about certain risks. Employees and the competent authority were also not informed in time.

The residents of Farmsum experienced complaints from the incident, such as headaches and nausea. The NAM has therefore indicated that, in addition to paying the fine, it will invest a total of 75,000 euros in the realization of the planned renovation of the village house in Farmsum.

There was also a leak in the morning of January 2, 2019. At a NAM location in Collendoornerveen (Overijssel), more than 1 cubic meter of desulphurisation liquid leaked partially into a ditch.

The OM states that NAM has not taken sufficient measures to prevent the leaks. This could have adverse consequences for people and the environment.

In addition to the fine and the investment in the village hall of Farmsum, NAM has also paid all damage costs. It concerns an amount of 1.3 million euros.
