Nakagami: What Márquez has to do with the FP2 best time

Takaaki Nakagami finished the second free practice session of the Andalusia GP in Jerez with an asphalt temperature of 53 degrees with best time. Because the times in the cooler morning session were faster, the 28-year-old Japanese remained in 8th place in the combined times list with his FP1 time.

“It’s too hot, but I still feel good,” said Taka with a smile. Incidentally, he set his fastest lap time in the afternoon on the medium rear tire. “By the end of the FP2 we had the soft tire, which is not too bad, but after 20 laps I have a hard time spinning. I struggle with graining especially on the left flank – and not just us. I think the problem was that it rained heavily on Tuesday morning, so the track conditions changed, ”he said. «In the FP2 there was more abrasion on the track and I also had a better feeling. But it is too hot now, especially the front tire is too soft for Honda. »

Nakagami’s first conclusion is positive: «Overall, it was a good start. On Monday and Tuesday we checked the data with the team and also HRC and we found a solution. You can see that now: the lap time is more constant and not too bad either. I have the feeling that the motorcycle is easier to drive. I’m pretty happy. »

How did the progress come about? «The set-up is quite different, we tried to get a little closer to the Márquez setting, which is very positive for me. Now I have to take a closer look at how Márquez drives because his driving style with the Honda is special. I want to see how he handles this bike, ”Taka revealed.

The fact that Marc Márquez didn’t go out on the track today had little effect in the LCR Honda box. «Nothing has changed, only Takeo may have a little more time to be in our box. He is very helpful, we also spoke to him last night. We also looked at what happened to him and compared my data with Marc’s. I can see the difference, »emphasized Nakagami. Takeo Yokoyama, the MotoGP project manager at Honda Racing Corporation, would spend a lot of time at LCR at any Grand Prix anyway.

Does the Honda driver dare to maintain his first place in FP2 in tomorrow’s qualifying? “Sure, why not,” said the Japanese laughing. «It was a good start, in FP1 and FP2 we did a great job, the whole team. I am pretty happy. We will of course try to fight for pole position. It’s going to be tough, but we can do it. We will give our best.”
