MOSCOW – The Kremlin issued a new call for an end to hostilities in and around Nagorno-Karabakh.

Previously, the head of foreign intelligence Russia stated that the mountainous region could provide a launch pad for militants to enter Russia.

Moscow expressed concern after the worst fighting in more than 25 years between ethnic groups Armenia and the Azerbaijani team entered the 10th day. AFP reports that Armenia has offered a concession if Azerbaijan is also ready to do so. AFP did not explain in detail the offer made by Prime Minister (PM) Nikol Pashinyan.

Azerbaijan insists it is ready to end the war if Armenia sets up a time frame to withdraw from Nagorno-Karabakh which legally belongs to Azerbaijan but is inhabited and governed by ethnic Armenians.

Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, called for an end to the war. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed serious concern about this extraordinary escalation while speaking with the Iranian foreign minister.

The head of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) Sergei Naryshkin said the conflict attracted mercenary and terrorist groups from the Middle East.

“We are talking about hundreds of people and even thousands of radicals who hope to make money in the new war in Karabakh,” said Sergei Naryshkin.

He warned that the South Caucasus region could become a “new launch pad for an international terrorist organization” from which militants could enter various countries, including Russia.
