N26 founders Stalf and Tayenthal as promoters

Every year, the business magazine trend publishes a ranking of the richest Austrians – and this also contains names that are known in the startup scene. Most of these are investors and CEOs from Corporates with an attached VC department – for the first time in 2019, the two founders of Challenger Bank N26, Valentin Stalf and Maximilian Tayenthal, made it into the ranking of the richest Austrians. In 2020, the two entrepreneurs will move up another place in the trend ranking.

+++ More about the ranking of the previous year +++

While the Stalf and Tayenthal still occupied places 87 and 88 in the ranking last year, they are now moving up to places 86 and 87. With a stake of 11.3 percent each in N26 and a valuation of the bank of $ 3.5 billion, their assets each amount to $ 395.5 million (around € 350 million). In the previous year, the shares of the two founders were each worth 260 million euros.

Investment for N26 in May 2020

In early May, N26 landed an investment of over $ 100 million. In a live talk with General Manager DACH Georg Hauer, we talked about all details and backgrounds of the investment.

The richest Austrians according to the ranking

The ranking is led by the Porsche and Piech families, who according to the trend have assets of 34.8 billion euros. The richest individual is still Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz with assets of 14.7 billion euros, followed by Johann Graf (Novomatic Group) with 5.75 billion euros.

Well-known startup investors and their assets

“2 minutes 2 million” investor and Strabag boss Hans Peter Haselsteiner also holds 26 percent of Strabag and, according to the trend, has assets of 1.75 billion euros. The Kapsch family – last noticed in the scene due to a cooperation with the RBI Elevator Lab – is in 61st place in the ranking; no specific assets are mentioned here.

Another well-known player in the scene is Hermann Hauser, Amadeus Capital, in the ranking of the 100 richest Austrians. He can be found at number 97, behind the N26 founders. This position in the ranking is unchanged compared to the previous year.

Austrians have around 100,000 euros in assets on average

In the cover story of the trend, a study by BCG is also cited, which most recently caused a stir in the brutkasten editorial team. Accordingly, the financial assets of Austrians increased in 2019 by ten percent to almost 800 billion euros. Converted to the number of residents, this means that every Austrian has an average wealth of around EUR 100,000 – including children. A family with two children should therefore have around 400,000 euros in financial assets.

However, only 320 people account for a third of these 800 billion euros. The rest of the population, which does not belong to the ranks of the super rich, split the remaining two thirds.

Online calculator: how rich am I?

A good overview of how rich you are compared to the rest of the population is provided by an online calculator that “Der Standard” developed in cooperation with Wifo. Here you enter data such as your own income and the size of your household – and anyone who lives in a property has a corresponding rent equivalent. Then you get an evaluation. Although the data come from pre-corona times and are therefore no longer up to date, the online calculator still gives a good overview. The online calculator is available at this link.
